Carbohydrate oxidation by the wheat smut fungus, Tilletia caries.

چکیده
Extensive genetic studies (1) and limited nutritional investigations (2, 3) have been accomplished for the wheat smut organism, Tilletia caries, but information is lacking concerning its metabolism and enzyme systems. A more systematic approach to control might be realized by a fuller understanding of the nutrition and metabolism of the smut fungus. Studies designed to elucidate the pathway of carbohydrate metabolism show that maltose, starch, and glucose are rapidly oxidized by resting cells and the phosphorylated sugars by cell-free extracts. The results with the phosphorylated esters suggest the operation of the Horecker pentose cycle, which has been demonstrated in other species. Thus this mechanism of metabolizing carbohydrate is recognized in another organism. The presence of hexokinase and aldolase has also been shown in the cell-free extracts.

Glucose oxidation in mycelia and spores of the wheat smut fungus Tilletia caries.
Previous studies with the wheat smut fungus, Tilletia caries, showed that this organism contains all the enzymes necessary for the operation of the pentose cycle and apparently of glycolvsis as well (Newburgh et al., 1955). Since the occurrence of a different pathway of carbohydrate catabolism or the predominance of a known pathway in the smut organism may be of importance for the control of sm...
متن کاملEffect of biofumigation with volatiles from Muscodor albus on the viability of Tilletia spp. teliospores.
Volatile organic compounds produced by the fungus Muscodor albus inhibit or kill numerous fungi. The effect of these volatiles was tested on dormant and physiologically active teliospores of the smut fungi Tilletia horrida, Tilletia indica, and Tilletia tritici, which cause kernel smut of rice, Karnal bunt of wheat, and common bunt of wheat, respectively. Reactivated rye grain culture of M. alb...
متن کاملKP4 to control Ustilago tritici in wheat: Enhanced greenhouse resistance to loose smut and changes in transcript abundance of pathogen related genes in infected KP4 plants
Ustilago tritici causes loose smut, which is a seed-borne fungal disease of wheat, and responsible for yield losses up to 40%. Loose smut is a threat to seed production in developing countries where small scale farmers use their own harvest as seed material. The killer protein 4 (KP4) is a virally encoded toxin from Ustilago maydis and inhibits growth of susceptible races of fungi from the Usti...
متن کاملSimple and rapid detection of Tilletia horrida causing rice kernel smut in rice seeds
A simple and rapid method for the detection of Tilletia horrida, the causal agent of rice kernel smut, in rice seeds is developed based on specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To design the specific primers for the detection of T. horrida, partial sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) DNA region of T. horrida, T. controversa, T. walkeri, T. ehrhartae, T. indica and T. caries were ...
متن کاملMolecular identification of Tilletia controversa and T. caries, the causal agent of wheat dwarf and common bunt
Common and dwarf bunt of wheat are recognized as being caused by three closely related species, Tilletia caries and T. laevis as common bunt, and T. controversa as dwarf bunt. The morphological characteristics of two species including T. controversa and T. caries were studied from wheat grown in two provinces of Iran, Lorestan and Chaharmahal–o-Bakhtiari duri...
